Specialty Workshops
Creating Character: Using Your Actor's Eye
9TH THROUGH 12TH GRADE
April 21ST to 24TH, 1PM to 4PM
$425

Guest Teaching Artist: Katie Strohacker
Inspired by the belief that actors must become keen observers of actual human behavior, this workshop invites high school acting and musical theatre students to explore character development through curious observation, physical discovery, and mindful embodiment. We’ll examine spine and posture, rhythm, center of gravity, hands and voice, and explore what this potentially says about a person’s attitude towards life. We’ll turn the lens inward through “I Am” exercises where students will be asked to consider and demonstrate various aspects of self and how these are expressed physically. We’ll explore physical storytelling through well-known archetypes. At the end of each day, we’ll apply exercises and discoveries to scene work from Romeo and Juliet, The Seagull, and Footloose, culminating in short scene performances at the end of Day 4. Through guided improvisations and partner scenes, students will bridge the gap between observation and truthful, playable action, leaving the workshop with a process for approaching character in monologues, plays and musicals.

Meet the Teaching Artist!
Katie Strohacker graduated from Northwestern University after David Schwimmer, before Meghan Markle and during Seth Meyers, Kathryn Hahn and Zach Braff. Following a move to New York City to pursue an acting career, she was cast in touring children’s theatre productions where she accrued an impressive number of La Quinta stays. She moved to Chicago to become “a serious actor” which meant she needed her Equity card if she was going to get anywhere in NY. She earned this and more in theatre-rich Chicago performing in classical and contemporary plays with regional companies that include Steppenwolf (“World Set Free,” u/s & replaced “Waving Goodbye”), The Metropolis (“Waving Goodbye”) Remy Bumppo (“Arcadia”), Victory Gardens (u/s performed “And Neither Have I Wings to Fly”), New American (“Five Women Wearing the Same Dress”), City Lit (“Right Ho, Jeeves!”) and Circle Theatre (“Eleemosynary” & “The Moon’s the Madonna” - Jeff Award nominated - Best Supporting Actress), and others. Rather than return to NYC, Katie chose to return to Boston to be closer to family and pursue other passions. She kept storytelling alive and well in her subsequent professions and while getting married and raising two kids. She misses the muscle building associated with being an actor and is excited to put these to work again while guiding young artists.
